Borovets in Bulgaria Resort Guide

Borovets is the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria. Situated at 1350 m above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain among age-old pine woods, Borovets is located at the foot of peak Moussala (2925 m) - the highest on Balkan Peninsula. Borovets is readily accessible, at just 73 km from Sofia and 126 km from Plovdiv. Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian tzars, Borovets gradually developed into a ski resort of various standards of hotels, restaurants and and apres ski entertainment opportunities besides a limited network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountain. As well as alpine skiing and boarding to cross-country skiing, ski-jumps and biathlon. The resort has twice hosted World Cup alpine events rounds, while its biathlon track is a regular fixture on international calendars. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty the air quality in Borovets is reputed to be extremely clean and almost totally free of any pollutants. Reported average temperature during January, the coldest month, is ms 4.6 0C.

Accomodation & Après Ski

Although the resort's setting is sublime, the architecture of the tight knit of random buildings which comprise the main centre of the resort detract from an otherwise potentially attractive location, save those well hidden in the trees. The two main sectors are unfortunately not linked and require a bit of a hike between them. That said the village lifts are all convenient for the main hotels. Accomodation is mainly hotel based with the Edelweiss and the Samokov being among the better bets. The latter is modern and up to date with swimming pool, sauna, and gym. The Rila offers daycare facilities for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Borovets attractions remain its relative cheapness and in this respect it attracts many families and individuals on a tight budget. Food and the standard of accomodation are extremely variable - from the plainly unappetising to the barely edible.
